Disderi Robot 3
11 30 Share TweetNormally, I wait until I have had a chance to try several rolls of film out before I review a camera. But I am so excited about the Disderi Robot 3 that I am writing about it after only one roll of film! This is one little plastic contraption that is not to be underestimated!
For many months, I thought about adding a multi-lens camera to my collection, but none of the choices really appealed to me until I saw what the Disderi Robot 3 can create…The strange, fuzzy, curved edges; the three unusual shapes the camera produces — I could not stop thinking about the unique result which this modest little camera can boast of until I got my hands on one.
In a way, the Disderi Robot 3 is the most ultimate Lomographic experience. By that, I mean that cameras do not really get simpler than this. There is no viewfinder except for a pretty useless, rectangular frame that pops up. It makes it really difficult to plan out shots, so I would recommend not even trying! Let the camera surprise you. Also, I have never had a camera attract more attention, including my bright yellow Holga. Each time you use press the shutter button, it makes the strangest winding sound that makes everyone around you ask if your camera just broke.
I was a kind of Lomographic lull until I started to use my Robot 3, which got me excited about Lomography all over again. It’s lot of fun, but I do have one warning: actually put the wrist strap on your wrist. If you don’t, then it could accidentally end up in some of your shots! Also, I think there is a learning curve with this camera in figuring out what will end up in your frame and what won’t, but that only adds to the experience.
The Disderi Robot 3 is a real bargain on eBay, selling for about fifteen dollars (USD). But believe it or not, it used to sell for even less. I first noticed it over six month ago and contemplated buying one, but I was worried about the quality until I got to see some examples of what this camera can do. At that time, they were listed around only $11! My guess is that more people began to take notice of this camera, so the very smart sellers increased the price a bit. In the last year, the price of Holgas on eBay have also increased, so maybe it is a general trend with toy camera prices, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the price of the Disderi Robot 3 keeps rising, so grab one as soon as you can! You won’t regret it.
