Cannes 2012: Tips from LomoKino Filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul

We’re coming to you live from the 65th Cannes Film Festival where Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul just had a press conference over breakfast before his film’s screening. During the talk, he shared his moviemaking tips to aspiring LomoKino directors. The most profound? “Don’t fall in love.” Read more here!

• He finds inspiration from “just living.”
• He actually bough his first book about scriptwriting after filming Mekong Hotel.
• His keywords are experience, love, and self-knowledge.
• For him, the real challenge in the film industry is to find funds—basically attracting producers and investors. “If you dont have money to pay an actor, shoot your dog,” he quipped.
• He dislikes Facebook and the Internet, believing they are things “we dont need.”
• He likes to watch Hollywood movies and American TV shows for real visual inspiration and technical performance inspiration.
• His parting words for future filmmakers: “Don’t fall in love. Or channel your love into your movie.”

As our Cannes correspondent Alexia Hocquette reports, he is generally an analogue person in the way he views things, in line with the Lomographic way of life! He enjoys the beauty of imperfection when shooting with the LomoKino, forcing one to be spontaneous. Take note, kids!
