Santa Maria del Flore, The "Duomo" of Firenze
9 7 Share TweetIt’s perhaps the most know building of Firenze all around the world and every tourist wants to stay in front of it… and it’s a real architectural masterpiece: the “Duomo”!
Firenze is perhaps one of the most famous city in the world as the capital of art and architecture of the “Renaissance” period. The XIV-XVIth centuries were a golden age for this city, and when you’re in town you can have the impression to walk in a giant open-air museum because of the greatest achievements of art and architecture are surrounding you at every corner!
The main cathedral of Firenze (and there are a LOT of fascinating churches in this town…), in the middle of the old town, is the “Duomo” or Santa Maria del Fiore. The construction of the building began 1296 and many different artists/architects worked on it until the final ending with the fascinating cupola designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. He built this masterpiece of art & architecture from 1420 to 1436. It’s an amazing and huge cupola, and a surprising achievement for the time to have such a massive and circular structure on the top of this cathedral. You can see it from almost every surrounding hill and when you got closer to the “Piazza del Duomo” you’ll see this giant cupola getting bigger and bigger until you’re there, at the feets of this impressive building. What a fascinating subject for photo/lomographers and Architecture lovers!! You can surround the building on every side and it’s still amazing and fascinating! And if you don’t know how to find the Duomo, just follow the tourists who all go there…..and it’s written everywhere on the signs in town…!
